Devgad is an amazing destination in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, consisting of total 98 villages and is globally known for its exports of locally grown Alphonso mangoes. How to Reach Devgad: The nearest railway station is Kankavli on Konkan Railway on Mumbai-Goa road. From Kankavli, one can get an auto-rickshaw or a state transport bus to reach Devgad-Vijaydurg.
1. Devgad Fort, Sindhudurg:
Location: Approximately 3 km from Devgad bus stand.
Features of Interest: Devgad town has derived its name from Devgad fort. Also known as Janjire Devgad. The fort has lighthouse, windmill plateau, Ganesh Mandir and three old canons. The walls, structure, bastions of the fort are still in good condition. Panoramic view of sea and beautiful sunset is something you cannot miss.
2. Kunkeshwar Mandir and Beach:
Location: Approximately 15 km from Devgad and 50 km from Kankavli
Features of Interest: Kunkeshwar Mandir is dedicated to Shiva temple and it is one of the finest example of ancient architecture. It is also known as Kashi of South Kokan. The ancient caves located in eastern side of temple are carved with beautiful idols of Lord Shiva, Parvati, Ganesha, and Nandi. Another attraction is golden sand beach where you can spend peaceful and pleasant time.
3. Vijaydurg Fort:
Location: Approximately 30 km from Devgad.
Features of Interest: The fort is also known as Eastern Gibraltar. The fort is said to be built by Raja Bhoj about 800 years ago. It is said that this is one of only two forts where Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj personally raised the saffron flag. The fort is situated at the mouth of Vaghotan River that separates Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. It is the largest fort on the coast and famous for its fine architecture. The fort also has a 200 m long tunnel for emergency evacuation.
4. Mithbav Beach:
Location: Approximately 24 km from Devgad
Features of Interest: Mithbav beach is surrounded by beautiful nature, one of the best destinations for nature photographers. The white sand beach is clean and safe for swimming also.
5. Taramumbari Beach:
Location: Approximately 2 km from Devgad.
Features of Interest: It is a small beach located in Devgad Taluka of Sindhudurg district. One can enjoy and spend peaceful time on this quiet and beautiful beach.
6. Dirba Devi goddess Temple:
Location: Approximately 4 km from Devgad
Features of Interest: The temple is dedicated to Goddess Dirbadevi. There is little fair at this temple at Tripurari Purnima.
